July 2009

1001 Nights

As most of you know, I play with Tallahassee Swing, so it is with pleasure that I announce that July 21st will be the 20th Anniversary of Tallahassee Swing's Tuesday Night Dance at the American Legion Hall. When you do the math, taking into consideration that we usually take a couple weeks off around Christmas, that comes out to 1001 Nights. Come by for this special event from 7:30 to 10:00. $7 – cheap!

AND come on out every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10. I will be playing bass with them on July 14 & 21 and August 11 & 25.

Cats In Orbit is back on August 15th

Cats In Orbit is Jimi McKenzie, Steve Redmond, and me. We will be at Hammaknockers in Panacea opening Rick Ott's From the Heart” live variety show. Things usually get started around 8:30.

I got out to hear some music the other day.

I caught Grant Peeples' CD release show for “Pawnshop”. Grant was backed by Lis & Lon Williamson, Kelly Goddard, Dave Johnson, and Kurt Johnston which really made for a magic evening. The New 76ers opened the show, setting things off right.

I also got to catch the Charles Atkins band at Chez Pierre. It was the first time I had heard Charles with his current band: Lois Hinners, Adam Gaffney, and Deb "Sweetgoove" Berlinger.

I appreciated a different take on the blues from The Trigger Happy Band with Bodega Bob Homme, Rev. Hollywood Archie Hinton and Naomi "Sugar" Harris, at the Down Below.

And, I was totally blown away by The Humbell at Bird's Aphrodisiac Oyster Shack – I don't know much about them but they can damn sure put on a Rock & Roll Show.

June 2009

The next Jim Crozier Band Show will take place at the American Legion Hall, Lake Ella, on Friday, June 26. We bring out Alvin James and the Pretty Big Band with help from the Jones Brothers, the Summit Ladies Choir, and the Bone Dry Band.

In the choir this time we have Deborah Lawson and Steffi Tassos returning to join Kathi Giddings and Katie Crozier. And with us for the first time, please welcome Avis Berry!

Bob Weiss is back to get us started off and to keep us going strong.

The Pretty Big Band features Jimi McKenzie and TD Giddings on guitars, Bill Landing on saxes, Steve Redmond on the kit, Jim Crozier on bass, and introduces my newest song “Back to Plan A”.

Show time is 8pm and the cover is only five bucks. Join us on the best dance floor in town; you won't won't want to sit down.

This will be a great time to pickup the Jim Crozier CD, “Down to the Village” if you don't have it yet.

You can Print the Poster at: http://jimcrozier.com/promo/JCB-Legion090626.pdf

AND:

Every Tuesday - Be sure to check out Tallahassee Swing. The band plays at the American Legion Hall (Lake Ella Drive, Tallahassee) every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10 (and has been for coming up on 20 years now). I will be playing bass with them on June 2 and June 23.

I finally got down to Hammaknockers in Panacea to check out what Rick Ott has been doing with his “From the Heart” live variety show. I expect to be joining him on an upcoming third Saturday. I got to hear “Harvest Gypseys” and Trafton Harvey and catch up with lots of old friends at the May edition of the show.

I am moved by Grant Peeples' new release, “Pawnshop”, especially the part about “she had to help me push it off”, on track 2. Lis & Lon Williamson, and Gatorbone Records really did it right, and I was glad to see Will Barrow's name among the long list of great pickers.

Jim Crozier's Occasional Newsletter

April 2009 supplement

Upcoming shows:

Dear friends,

It seems that I left out a couple important events in my last correspondence, also a couple new events have come up – thus, this April 2009 supplement.

I will be playing with Sentimental Journey on April 16 at the Museum of Florida History, at the R A Gray Building, for their monthly Third Thursday event. We will be playing from 5pm to 7pm, so please drop by, have a listen, take a look at the museum, and for a couple bucks, have some fine refreshment, with beer or wine if you like. Sentimental Journey is an acoustic band playing music from the Great American Songbook with Chip Bloyd on lead harmonica, Brian Smith on guitar, Dave Dickle on mandolin and guitar, and Jim Crozier on bass. We will also be at the Miccosukee Land Co-Op for their annual Spring Festival on Saturday, May 2.

The Jim Crozier Band has been invited to join many great Tallahassee Musicians at the big Earth Day Jam at Bradfordville Blues Club on Saturday, April 18. Learn about the event at http://www.earthdayjam.org/ . Jimi McKenzie and TD & Kathi Giddings will be with me – and a few more folks will be joining us, too!

I will be playing with Tallahassee Swing for the Knott House Street Dance at 7pm, Saturday, April 25.

The next big Jim Crozier Band show will take place at the American Legion Hall, Lake Ella, on Friday, June 26. I will be back with lots of my friends and at least a couple new songs. This show will feature; Alvin James and the Pretty Big Band with help from the Jones Brothers, the Summit Ladies Choir, and the Bone Dry Band. More about this later!

For any of you folks who might be attending the annual Silver Stars Banquet at the University Center on April 30, I will be joining Steve Sternberg and the band for that gala affair.

AND:

Every Tuesday - Be sure to check out Tallahassee Swing every chance you get. The band plays at the American Legion Hall (Lake Ella Drive, Tallahassee) every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10 (and has been for coming up on 20 years now). I will be playing bass with them on April 14 and 28.

Recent Events:

Will Barrow dropped in from Nashville to do a songwriter show with the Harvest Gypsies a couple weeks ago. It was wonderful to see him again – we had played together some back in the early 80's – and it was particularly fun to hear him singing his own songs, and Rick, Eddie, Fred, and Art did a fine job backing him up for a set, it was totally worth the trip!.

I will be playing with Tallahassee Swing at the annual Tallahassee Museum Jazz & Blues Festival at 4pm, Saturday, April 4; and for the Knott House Street Dance at 7pm, Saturday, April 25.

For any of you folks who might be attending the annual Silver Stars Banquet at the University Center on April 30, I will be joining Steve Sternberg and the band for that gala affair.

I will be making it out to Doc Russell's Wednesday Nite Open Mic at the Warehouse at least a couple more times in the next few weeks. That is a very well run event and it has been good for me to rough it on the stage alone, and good to hear what all of the younger folks have been up to – there's some good stuff out there.

AND:

Every Tuesday - Be sure to check out Tallahassee Swing every chance you get. The band plays at the American Legion Hall (Lake Ella Drive, Tallahassee) every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10 (and has been for coming up on 20 years now). I will be playing bass with them on March 31, April 14 and 28.

Recent Events:

On March 6, I joined Florida Banjo star Mary Z Cox and hubby Bob as they hosted the Cracker Coffee House event at the Stephen Foster Memorial State Park at White Springs. We played to a packed house for people from all over the country. Ken and Virginia Miller and Ron Patrick also came over from Tallahassee to join the show.

After years of saying “I am going to get to some of the concerts of the Biennial Festival of New Music at FSU College of Music”, I finally did during the last weekend of January. I attended three of the concerts including one by “eighth blackbird”, an established ensemble specializing in the performance of new music – http://www.eighthblackbird.com/. I also attended an electro-acoustic concert where a single instrument interacts with electronic music which featured some fine performances. The final concert I attended featured the FSU Wind Orchestra, the University Symphony Orchestra, and the University Chamber Choir. Of all of it, I probably most liked the work of current FSU doctoral student, Neil Anderson-Himmelspach. Nearly thirty composers from around the world participated in the festival.

On February 12, I made it down to Sopchoppy to the Frog and Hummingbird Company and Butterfield's Roadhouse for one of the special blues jam sessions that Salli and Gabriel have been hosting. I totally enjoyed the scene – the audience was to die for! Thanks guys, I will be sure to make it down again.

I used a new online service called tunecore.com to release Talkin' To the People as a single – so you may buy it now at iTunes, Amie Street, Rhapsody, and other popular digital music distribution points! - even got some money from that already, yea (not much, but it's a start).

Jim Crozier's Occasional Newsletter

February 2009

Upcoming shows:

The Jim Crozier Band is joined by The Jones Brothers Band, and The Bone Dry Band at The Warehouse on Friday, February 6, at 8pm.

Funny thing, it seems that all of these bands have the same people in them, and each has its own special charm.

The evening begins as Bob Weiss leads the Jones Brothers though a set of Classic R&B, Down Home Blues, and a couple of songs from Jimi McKenzie's vault.

Next up, I take the center mic and invite the choir to join us as the Jim Crozier Band shreds songs from my CD, "Down to the Village", and some newer stuff, including two songs that you have never heard.

TD Giddings then leads the Bone Dry Band through Music from Suburban Woodville!

I will be holding the bass guitar for the evening joined by Steve Redmond on the tubs.

On guitar we feature Eric Pfeufer, TD Giddings, and Jimi McKenzie.

Bill Landing wails on all of the saxophones.

The Choir is: Kathi Giddings, Deborah Lawson, Steffi Tassos, and Katie Crozier.

We may find that there are guest players in the horn section, too.

AND:

Every Tuesday - Be sure to check out Tallahassee Swing every chance you get. The band plays at the American Legion Hall (Lake Ella Drive, Tallahassee) every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10 (and has been for coming up on 20 years now). I am playing bass with them on February 3 & 17. The band really cooks and on Feb 3 we will be playing my new chart: Nola's Waltz.

Recent Events:

I have been reading a book called "The Rest is Noise" by Alex Ross. Alex is the music critic at New Yorker Magazine. He wrote a most engaging book on the history of 20th Century Classical Music - or as he put it another way, the history of the 20th Century through music. Since music history was never one of my best subjects in school, it was good for me to catch up on this.

I got to hear some great players in the last few weeks. The Bag We Bag show was really a trip - then I stopped by the Red Bar to hear Rick Lollar's jazz gig - when I got there Rodney Jordan and the gang were sitting in - wow - then the kids came back and finished it off great. Last week-end I went to hear the Mayhaws at the Warehouse. The surprise opening act was the New 76ers who were standing in front of the stage, nothing plugged in, no mic, and they owned the room.

Jim Crozier’s Occasional News Letter - December, 2008

Upcoming Shows

January 2 - The Jim Crozier Acoustic Band will be appearing at Bird’s Aphrodisiac Oyster Shack (where Wilson’s BBQ used to be – Bronough St, just North of Tennessee St.) We will start about 9pm and play until at least 1am for just a $3 cover! This is our first time at Bird’s and I am excited to check it out. So far I have commitments from TD and Kathi Giddings and Jimi McKenzie to join me in the band. I have an open invitation out for some other fine folks. We will be playing all original material, especially since everyone in the band has written at least one song.

February 6 - I just booked the Warehouse for a show. It will be the Jim Crozier Band with lots of friends. The show will start about 8:30 for a $5 cover. More later on this.

Every Tuesday - Be sure to check out Tallahassee Swing every chance you get. The band plays at the American Legion Hall (Lake Ella Drive, Tallahassee) every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10 (except for the Tuesday between Christmas and New Years) and has been for coming up on 20 years now. Jim is playing bass with them on Dec 2 and 9, and for Tallahassee Swing’s 2008 Christmas Party on Tuesday, Dec 23. Jim shares the bass chair with Sam Adams III, and so is there roughly every other Tuesday.

Recent Events

I have had the pleasure of participating in two songwriter events during the month of November.

On the first, Jimi McKenzie and I went to DeLand, Florida to join the Johnny McKenzie Trio at Caffe DiVincci as part of the 8th Annual DeLand Original Music Festival. It was a really well run event – 17 stages – all in one day – lot of good stuff. Check it out at http://www.ssa.cc/d08sch.htm

In the middle of the month I had a gig at the 24th annual Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival at Perdido Key, FloraBama. They really know how to make someone feel welcome. I played in the round with Jimi McKenzie, James H Willams (from Pascagoula, MS), and a very young Monroe Hamit (you will hear about this guy one day). We totally lucked out because we were followed by a group of writers that included Tim Johnson, Steve Williams, Thom Shepherd, and Lance Miller. Since they have a bunch of hits among them, we ended up with a pretty good crowd! Next year, I will make sure to sign up for that one early.

Here is a listing of the writers: http://www.fbisf.com/writers.htm
